Around 1.1 kilograms of CO2e were produced per liter of milk in 2020. But how can a dairy farm's footprint be reduced? This is the question we have been working on for the past three years. Working initially with Nestlé Germany and later with Wagner Pizza and the Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Sciences (HfWU), we explored how the CO2e footprint of milk could be reduced at the Frese dairy farm in Mörshausen, Hesse.
Over 30 measures were implemented, examined for their effectiveness and evaluated in close collaboration with scientists, farmers and sustainability experts. What challenges will tomorrow's milk production have to face? And how can we support farms on their way to reducing CO2e emissions?
The climate-friendly dairy farm in Mörshausen shows how it can be done.
Living in tune with nature, adapting to environmental conditions and taking the legacy of our ancestors into a meaningful future. This is what sustainable working means to the Frese family.
So, it's no wonder that Mario Frese was excited to hear about the net zero project, “Many of the measures don’t take a lot of effort to implement once they have been established. I'll definitely continue using them on our farm.”

The project will run through to April 2026 to collect further data. The findings and results of the project will be incorporated into the Hochwald Milch Plus sustainability program, supporting all member farms with the implementation of CO2e reduction measures, which will help to achieve climate targets along the entire value chain.
